One of the biggest worries people have before a photoshoot is:
“What if I look awkward in photos?”
The truth is — almost everyone feels that way at first.
The good news? Natural, candid photos are not about being a professional model. They come from feeling comfortable, connected, and present in the moment. The best photos usually happen in between poses — the laughs, the movement, the quiet smiles, and the genuine reactions.
Here are a few ways to help your session feel more natural and relaxed.
Focus on Each Other — Not the Camera
Some of the most emotional and authentic photos happen when couples or families interact naturally instead of staring directly into the lens the entire time.
Talk to each other.
Walk together.
Laugh.
Tell jokes.
Be playful.
During sessions, I often guide people into movement and conversation because it creates real emotion instead of stiff posing.
Don’t Stress About Posing
You do not need to know how to pose before your session.
A good photographer will guide you through prompts and natural movements that flatter you while still feeling like you. Small adjustments in posture, hand placement, or movement make a huge difference without making things feel forced.
The goal is never perfection — it’s connection.
Wear Something You Feel Comfortable and Confident In
Confidence shows in photos.
If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or wearing something that doesn’t feel like your style, it becomes harder to relax naturally. Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable, confident, and able to move freely.
Neutral tones, earthy colors, and layers also photograph beautifully outdoors here in Northern Wisconsin.
Embrace Movement
Movement brings life into photos.
Walking, spinning, cuddling, fixing someone’s hair, holding hands, or even joking around helps create candid moments naturally. Static poses can sometimes feel stiff, while movement creates emotion and storytelling.
That’s why many sessions feel more like spending time together than standing still for a camera.
Trust the Process
Natural photos rarely happen in the first five minutes.
Most people start a little nervous — and that’s completely normal. Usually, once the pressure fades and everyone settles in, the real moments start showing up.
Some of the best images come from the moments people didn’t even realize were being captured.
The Goal Isn’t “Perfect”
Perfectly posed photos are nice.
But genuine photos are the ones people never forget years later.
The laughter.
The wind blowing through your hair.
The way someone looks at you when you aren’t paying attention.
Those are the moments worth remembering.
At Revoy Reflections Photography, my goal is to create sessions that feel relaxed, natural, and true to who you are — so your photos feel like real memories, not forced moments.
